Women's Network—A Day in the Life: Laurice Rutledge Lambert

Laurice Rutledge Lambert, Aligned Health Law, LLC (AHL)
AHLA's Women's Leadership Council is excited to present 'Ji Day in the Life," where featured health law professionals walk you through their day: the good, the bad, the mundane, and the inspiring. We hope that this reflection offers some insight into the busy lives of our members. If you'd like to contribute to 'Ji Day in the Life," please email khoggard@americanhealthlaw.org.
I proudly wear many hats-mother to my three children (ages 9, 7, and 4), wife to my biggest fan and husband, Matt, lacrosse coach for my 7-year-old daughter's team, and CEO of Aligned Health Law, LLC (AHL) (where I am a practicing attorney). I very much value health, wellness, and fitness not only for the physical aspect but also for my mental health. I work out with a trainer once a week, enjoy running and walking, and have recently gotten into riding my Peloton. I meditate daily and have a journaling practice. In terms of hobbies, I enjoy baking (usually with help from my kids) and recently started taking golflessons (golf has been great for me-I am achievement-oriented, and you can always be better at golf, I'm not even sure it's possible to hit the ball the same way twice!). I am proudly a member of the Women's Purpose Community, led by Jessica Joines (my executive coach)-this group gave me the confidence I needed to take the leap of faith to start AHL, and I am beyond grateful.
6:00am: I wake up to my alarm, usually snooze for ten minutes, and before getting out of bed, say my daily personal and professional affirmations ( these are what keep me grounded and reminded of what's most important on a daily basis).
6:15am: I turn on my tea kettle and then head to wake up my older two children and lead them (groggily) up to our family room, where they watch a few minutes of TV. I proceed to make lunches, grab clothes, and usher them out the door and on to the bus by 6:55am !
7:00am: After I get the older two out the door, I take ten minutes to meditate, and shortly after that wake up my youngest son. I help him get ready and we usually head out the door around 7:45/8am. Working out and showering happens sometime after I get back from dropping him off at school, and the timing of all of this is dictated by my first call of the day. Depending on the day, Matt will run our youngest to school instead.
9:00am: AHL is based in Atlanta but is a virtual firm, so most days, my video calls start between 9-1 0am. I work on emails and check my to-do list before jumping on calls. I am often responding to Teams messages as well, making sure the team is doing well and no one needs anything from me.
11 :00am: No one day is the same, but most mornings are filled with client and team calls. We have partner meetings and full team meetings once per month. Otherwise, to ensure we stay connected virtually, I stay in close contact with all of my colleagues via Teams and calls. My Chief of Staff and I are in lockstep all day, which is needed to ensure we stay on top of client requests for engagement letters, meetings, deadlines, and deliverables.
12:30pm: Unless I have an in-person meeting, which happens two to three times per month, most of the time I eat lunch at my desk. Honestly, it's Matt who makes sure that I eat and usually takes care of making or ordering lunch. Occasionally, we'll eat together, but more often than not, I eat "on the fly" while responding to messages or off camera for a few minutes while on a call.
2:00pm: Typically, I take calls until about 3pm and, when I have major client deliverables, I do my best to block my calendar to handle those matters. Lately, though, it has been challenging to find quiet time during the day for strategic and deep thinking, and I tend to spend evenings on bigger client projects ( although, I am actively working with my Chief of Staff to better manage my calendar so I have more daytime hours to perform client work).
3:00pm: I try to keep 3-5pm free from calls so that I can review the day, enter my time, update my todo list, check in with the team, and figure out what is left for the day that needs to be addressed. This doesn't always work, but my Chief of Staff and I are actively working on this so that I am less frazzled heading into the evening with my family.
5:15pm: My home is a duplex and my office is upstairs. Matt typically picks up all the kids and is home with them by 5: 15/ 5:30pm, at which time I head downstairs and resume my "mom duties". Although I am thankful not to have a commute, it doesn't allow much time to transition or unwind-I try to get downstairs with enough time to change before everyone walks in the door.
5:30pm: The evening is busy-between 5:30-8:30pm, Matt and I juggle sports practices, unpacking bookbags and assisting with homework, and getting everyone fed, bathed, and into bed. No evening is the same. We do have a babysitter on Wednesday evenings during this window so we have a "break" - sometimes we grab dinner out or order in and watch TV, and other times, I spend this time working (but this is not the intended use for the time, and I am trying to preserve this time the best I can).
11 :00pm: I usually work for a while after the kids get to sleep but try and log off by 1 0pm. Occasionally, Matt and I will watch one episode of a TV show together (right now we are into The Blacklist on Netflix, and we are not sure how we missed this one when it aired originally!). I read for a few minutes before falling asleep-I can only sleep in our bed, with total darkness and quiet.
